D. in history from the University of California, Berkeley in 1971; he has made significant contributions in the areas of modern French labor, social, cultural and political history and social theory; he serves on the Board of Advisors of the Institute for Advanced Study and was formerly a professor of sociology and history at the University of Michigan; he is known for promoting anthropological concepts in sociology, for studies of the French revolution, the French labor history, and the occupational sociology of Marseilles; he is the son of William Hamilton Sewell (1909-2001), the Chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1967 to 1968)
